Jdg 8:22 Then the men of Israel said unto Gideon, Rule thou over us, both thou, and thy son, and thy son’s son also: for thou hast delivered us from the hand of Midian.

Jdg 8:23 And Gideon said unto them, I will not rule over you, neither shall my son rule over you: the LORD shall rule over you.

This statement looks very noble – but was it Gideon’s excuse to skip responsibility.
Gideon turn down of this offer was a beginning of something what God had in store.
We need to understand that God wants to rule people through a person who is submissive. We find that Gideon did not enquire of the Lord.

Gideon stopped thinking of the welfare of the nation but he was thinking about himself.
When we don’t focus on God only natural thing we focus is ourselves.
It is natural to rejoice over the victory but it is a disaster to be complacent (self-Satisfied) after a victory.

What happened to Gideon was he was complacent.
Complacent means Self- satisfied, pleased with ones achievement.

He became complacent because he forgot his call, he forgot that God called him to be a mighty warrior. HE forgot that God chose him to be an answer for the nation.

When we forgot who we are in God we also forget the purpose of our life.

We need to remember that we are God’s answer for this nation and city.

Rev 1:6 – God has called us kings and priests and God is counting on us to eradicate poverty, to uphold righteousness, to bring change in the society.

God has a purpose and plan for everyone of our lives.

Isa 49:6 And he said, It is a light thing that thou shouldest be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob, and to restore the preserved of Israel: I will also give thee for a light to the Gentiles, that thou mayest be my salvation unto the end of the earth.

Mat 5:14 Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.

The two most important days in your life are the day you were born and the day you find out why.

Who you are is the true identity in God.

Php 3:12  Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect: but I follow after, if that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus.

Good motivation from Paul. He is not satisfied but he is pressing on.

Three signs that whether we are complacent.

  1. Your heart for God changes.
Jdg 8:24 And Gideon said unto them, I would desire a request of you, that ye would give me every man the earrings of his prey. (For they had golden earrings, because they were Ishmaelites.)

Gideon did not want to be king but he wanted the blessing of the king.

Jdg 8:25  And they answered, We will willingly give them. And they spread a garment, and did cast therein every man the earrings of his prey.

Jdg 8:26  And the weight of the golden earrings that he requested was a thousand and seven hundred shekels of gold; beside ornaments, and collars, and purple raiment that was on the kings of Midian, and beside the chains that were about their camels’ necks.

Jdg 8:27 And Gideon made an ephod thereof, and put it in his city, even in Ophrah: and all Israel went thither a whoring after it: which thing became a snare unto Gideon, and to his house.

Gideon instead of seeking God he started to seek gold. We too can fall into that trap when we like the privileges of the kingdom but not the responsibility of the kingdom.

We all like a clean house but somebody else have to clean it. We all like to have a neat bed but you want somebody else to come and clean it. We like clean car and bike but somebody else have to wash it. IT shows that we all like privileges but we don’t like responsibilities.

In the Kingdom of God, God entrusts with privileges, blessings and responsibilities.
God loved us so that we can freely love people; God is willing to forgive us unconditionally so that we can forgive everyone around us, that’s how the Kingdom works.

The Kingdom of God is not lacking blessing but responsible men and women.
Men who made difference were the men who took up responsibility.
We all know about blessing verse but we know very less about the verses on the responsibility of a Christian.

Every one of us are leaders. We were born to lead. When God man and woman he said have dominion over the world.

If you want to be a good leader start with yourself.
Start leading yourself and responsible for yourself you can never lead others.

If you can’t decisions and if you can’t organize how do you expect to lead people.

After every blessing comes responsibility.
Luk 12:48  But he that knew not, and did commit things worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with few stripes. For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required: and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask the more.

We all like much but with much blessing comes much accountability. If God has given you much talent, HE is going to hold you, if you are given much blessing He is going to hold you, if you are given much money, HE is going to hold you.

  1. Your Priority changes
Gideon gets obsessed with gold and makes gold his god. It becomes idol for him.

Jdg 8:27 And Gideon made an ephod thereof, and put it in his city, even in Ophrah: and all Israel went thither a whoring after it: which thing became a snare unto Gideon, and to his house.

Gideon is no longer enquiring God.
He’s got the wealth and now the wealth has got hold of him, he makes it a priority so he needs no longer God.

Having money is not the problem. But what you do with the money that’s what the problem. When money becomes priority it’s a problem.

Today you ask people they will tell:
My goal is to make money.
My passion to be a millionaire.

Love for money.

1Ti 6:10 For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

When we don’t focus on God our priority changes.

Matthew 6:33

Time spent with God and His word is not time wasted but time invested

When we stand before God – he will ask did you read my word. What will be our answer?

  1. Purpose changes
    Your carnal desires takes over.

Gideon now wanted to have the lifestyle of a king.
today we all need kingsize – king size house, bed, burger everything king-sized.

Jdg 8:29 And Jerubbaal the son of Joash went and dwelt in his own house.
Jdg 8:30  And Gideon had threescore and ten sons of his body begotten: for he had many wives.

Now Gideon wanted to stay in his own house and he just did not stop there but now he did not have any other responsibility he had 70 sons.

Kings had many wives and children in those days. Gideon says I want lifestyle of a king but don’t want responsibilities.

The last thing that we all do is to take up responsibility in the Church and get involved in the Kingdom. We don’t like it.

He just did not have many wives, many sons but now he wanted a concubine as well. Concubine is not your wife but lives like a wife.

Gideon died – he knew he was sinning but he went on sinning he did not change why because his heart, priority and purpose changed.

A complacent Christian is not a back sliding Chrsitian but a lukewarm Christian.
We might attend the Church but we lost the fire that we all once had in our lives, that passion when we did ministry earlier. Connection with God.

Everything becomes problem. We read Bible because we have to finish our exercise.
Gideon started well but did not finish well.

It’s not how we start is important but how we finish is important.

Consequences of Complacent.
Jdg 9:1
And Abimelech the son of Jerubbaal went to Shechem unto his mother’s brethren, and communed with them, and with all the family of the house of his mother’s father, saying,

Jdg 9:2  Speak, I pray you, in the ears of all the men of Shechem, Whether is better for you, either that all the sons of Jerubbaal, which are threescore and ten persons, reign over you, or that one reign over you? remember also that I am your bone and your flesh.

Jdg 9:3  And his mother’s brethren spake of him in the ears of all the men of Shechem all these words: and their hearts inclined to follow Abimelech; for they said, He is our brother.

Jdg 9:4  And they gave him threescore and ten pieces of silver out of the house of Baalberith, wherewith Abimelech hired vain and light persons, which followed him.

Jdg 9:5  And he went unto his father’s house at Ophrah, and slew his brethren the sons of Jerubbaal, being threescore and ten persons, upon one stone: notwithstanding yet Jotham the youngest son of Jerubbaal was left; for he hid himself.

Gideon just did not take decision for himself but also for his children.
As the father was so the children were so they too did not take up any responsibility.
Their sons were killed on one stone. Gideon lived a complacent life and brought ruin on his next generation.

Success is not when we are successful personally but a true success is when we have a successor. – Stanley Mehta

When you don’t lead – someone else will lead.

When Godly men don’t lead then wicked lead.

Gideon who lead people into victory also lead people away from God because he did not do anything.
